EXCLUSIVE: DUNCAN'S BABY BLUES // Added: 10-Mar-2007

| Dancing on Ice star quits the music business to concentrate on spending time with daughter Tianie-Finn and building up his TV career By Rick Fulton DUNCAN JAMES has admitted he never wanted to go solo after Blue split - and he's now quit the music business to spend more time with his daughter. Tonight Duncan will skate for a place in the Dancing on Ice finals next Saturday. And instead of promoting his new single, Amazed, which was due out on Monday but has now been recalled, he has signed up for a six-week Dancing on Ice tour, which starts at the end of this month. Now the 28-year-old plans to find work on TV either as a presenter or actor and is also hoping to work in London's West End. Last night Duncan, who has presented The National Lottery, City Hospital, GMTV and ITV2's coverage of Soapstar Superstar, said: "I never wanted to do a solo album, which is why I was the last one in Blue to do it. "But I had to honour my contract with EMI and I'd signed for another couple of albums. "I haven't been happy in the music industry since Blue ended and never liked it when we had to go around Europe promoting, even in the band. "Now I've got a young daughter I want to spend time with her, not sitting in a room in Germany being asked the same questions by different people all day." In an age where our pop stars, from Robbie Williams to Britney Spears, burn out and go into rehab, leaving the music business is probably a good thing for Duncan. Since Blue split in 2005 Duncan's solo career has been disappointing. While his first foray into work outside Blue was IBelieve My Heart, a duet with Keedie in 2004 that reached No.2 in the singles charts, his solo work never reached those heights again. Singles Sooner or Later and Can't Stop A River didn't make it into the top 30 and when he released debut album Future Past last year it didn't even graze the top 50 and in the end sold only 15,000 copies in the UK. His third solo single, Amazed, was due to be released to coincide with his stint in Dancing on Ice - his label hoping to cash in on the popularity of the show. But it now won't be released. He said: "I had a big decision this year about what I was going to do with my career. "The start of 2007, with Dancing on Ice, has been great and made me realise I don't want anything to do with music anymore, I just want to concentrate on TV. "Dancing on Ice has been really positive for me and the thought of going round promoting the single just depresses me. "I was never great at promoting, I hated it. I don't want to do it anymore. The record company told me I needed to prioritise what I was doing. "Me going on tour for six weeks with Torvill and Dean is six weeks I can't do any work for the record company and it became so much pressure on me. So I decided to knock that side of my life on the head." It also signals the death knell for anyone thinking he, Simon Webbe, Lee Ryan, and Antony Costa will reform. Duncan, who turns 29 next month, said: "I don't want to go back to Blue. I've been there, done that." Of course there's another huge factor in Duncan's life - being a dad. He is father to two-year-old daughter Tianie-Finn from a one-night-stand with Claire Grainger. Duncan is fiercely proud of being a dad and although he was never an item with Claire, he is determined to be there for Tianie-Finn, especially because his own dad Simon Roscoe walked out on his mum Fiona before Duncan was born. Duncan said: "Being a dad is a huge thing for me. I'm very much part of her life and I wouldn't want to miss her growing up. "It's about being a dad and being there for her. Travelling around and being in different time zones and not being able to speak to her and see her isn't something I can do. "I don't want to be away from home all the time. I'm nearly 30." Although he's single, he says he won't be getting back with Claire. And he wanted to point out that he was never dating Claire when Tianie was conceived, despite what's been written. The idea that he did the same as his dad and left the mother of his child before the child was born is abhorrent to him. He said: "Claire and I were never together before our daughter was born. We've known each other for eight years and became best friends. "We had a bit of a night of it and she got pregnant but we weren't even together. "We didn't split up before our daughter was born because we weren't together. It was a one-off that produced our lovely daughter." Tianie-Finn is now the apple of her father's eye and has been down to see him skate on Dancing on Ice. And if he gets through tonight, she will be there cheering him on next Saturday in the final. He added: "She loves it. I'm going to teach her to skate and I'm getting an outfit being made by wardrobe. "It's a Lycra number with sequins and it will get the big reveal this weekend." TONIGHT Duncan has to skate for his place in the final three against favourite Kyran Bracken, Clare Buckfield and Emily Symons. While Emily is expected to be voted off tonight, Duncan thinks it's always down to how well they skate on the ice. But Duncan, who is training four hours a day, every day, said: "I am in the semi-finals and can't believe it. I never thought I'd get this far. "I went into this competition quite hopeful that I'd do OK and stay in maybe to week five or six. "So I do feel proud of myself over how hard I've worked. So if there are Scots voting for me, thanks so, so much, please keep voting." Tonight he will be skating to U2's I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, with partner Maria Filippov. Duncan admits he wouldn't have got this far without her. He added: "She's a very, very good friend of mine and she will always be part of my life." And he has been taking no notice of this week's major news story - the moment when ITV pulled the plug on premium-rate phone-in shows, including Dancing on Ice. Yesterday it was announced that Dancing on Ice will go ahead as planned, with viewers being able to vote for their favourite celebrities Duncan said: "I'm a contestant in this show so I just get on with it. "I'm not into the politics of ITV and what's going on." And if he loses out tonight or next Saturday, it won't be an end to Lycra and sequins for Duncan. He will join other skating celebrities including Kyran, Clare and Lisa Scott-Lee from this year, last year's stars Bonnie Langford, Stefan Booth and two stars from the show's Australian version on the tour. It starts at the end of March in Birmingham and ends at the Braehead Arena, near Glasgow, on April 27 and 28. Duncan added: "It'll be a laugh". That's what's important to him now - which is why he got an afro hairdo for dancing to The Jackson 5's Can You Feel It. He said: "When you are dressed up in Lycra and sequins you can't take yourself too seriously, so what's wrong with a bit of curly hair for a night?" The semi-final of Dancing on Ice is on ITV1 at 5.20pm with The Skate Off at 9.20pm. |

Disco inferno hits Bromley: Stars blame it on the boogie // Added: 13-Feb-2007
| THE great disco anthems of the 70s are celebrated in a star-studded show opening at Bromley's Churchill Theatre. Boogie Nights tells the tale of ordinary folk who escape the struggles of their daily lives through the fun and glamour of music and dancing at their local night club. The show features more than 30 iconic hits including We Are Family, Le Freak, YMCA and I Will Survive. The cast includes boyband heartthrob Antony Costa, with pop legend Alvin Stardust playing his dad. The show also stars Nick Bailey, best known as Kat Slater's favourite GP Dr Trueman in EastEnders. Nick explains the show's timeless appeal. "Boogie Nights recreates the local club culture which existed in the 70s," he says. "It was a special place. However tough things were, you could escape to this other world." advertisementFormer Blue star Antony came straight from a lead role in Blood Brothers into rehearsals for Boogie Nights. "I'm so looking forward to it," he says. "The script's brilliant and the music's even better. "I grew up with Earth, Wind and Fire, my favourite band. When I was in Blue we recorded with Stevie Wonder and Kool and the Gang, so this music is natural for me." Life has changed since the heady days of international pop stardom. "It was a mad time, going suddenly from being an 18-year-old north west London boy to being Antony Costa the pop star. We just rode the wave and enjoyed it." But the teenage idol was no stranger to the limelight, having been in Grange Hill as a youngster. "I was 14 years-old, and I was a cheeky little git," he laughs. Has he always wanted to be centre stage? "I must've been about four," he grins. "I remember singing Elvis songs in front of the mirror with a hairbrush for a microphone." Alvin has enjoyed at least three successful pop careers. As Shane Fenton, he had a string chart singles in the 60s. Then the 70s saw the launch of leather-clad Alvin Stardust when My Coo Ca Choo became an international hit. "I thought I'd had my shot in the 60s," he recalls. "So get another crack at the whip and for it to go global was phenomenal." The 80s saw another renaissance and more hits for the enduring rocker, who still tours with his band, packing venues across Europe. Alvin is also a veteran of stage musicals, having made his debut in Godspell 19 years ago, where he met his wife, Julie. They have a six-year-old daughter, Millie. "We met on the first day of rehearsals and we've been together ever since." He has also starred in Beauty and the Beast and Phantom of the Opera, and he played the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium. Alvin says he's equally happy in theatre or rock'n'roll. "My real love is working with a live band, so Boogie Nights is best of both worlds for me," he says. [source: newsshoper] |

| Duncan James's future on Dancing On Ice has been left in doubt after he suffered an injury in rehearsals. The former Blue singer fell while practising a jump for tonight's show with partner Maria Filippov, and doctors fear that he may have aggravated a previous back problem. Duncan was ordered to rest after struggling through a dress rehearsal yesterday. A friend told The Sun: "It's touch and go whether he will be able to skate at all." [Source: digitalspy] |

| DUNCAN James’ best pal says he’ll inch to victory in Dancing On Ice — thanks to his secret trouser weapon. Former Blue bandmate Simon Webbe, 27, claimed the singer’s impressive manhood will swing it with the ladies. Simon said: “He’s having to wear lots of tight clothes — and he’s very comfortable in that department. “The ladies will have noticed.” Simon added that 28-year-old Duncan’s skateboarding skills will also help him in the ITV1 contest. He said: “I’m proud of Duncan doing the ice dancing. A lot of people don’t realise that he’s a surfer dude, a skateboarder from way back. “He’ll probably win because he has got the balance.” [Source: The sun] |

Dancing On Ice star suffers with underwear // Added: 05-Feb-2007
| Former Blue star Duncan James reckons his worst Dancing On Ice injury has been caused by his thong. The 28-year-old claims that the restricting underwear he's forced to wear is the most painful thing about the ITV show. 'It is really demanding on the groin area,' he says. 'The jockstrap chafes like hell. It's skin-coloured and ruts right up my bottom. I don't know how woman cope with thongs.' The poor love. Let's hope his bright pink shirts and fancy ice stating outfits help him feel a lot more butch |

My Soul Pleads For You (Angel) // Added: 05-Feb-2007
| Since Simon Webbe has taken flight as a solo artist it seems to have given him an inner assurance. Often on TV appearances with his ex-band mates Blue he would come across as rather arrogant, a side to the singer that made him unappealing and difficult to take seriously. Now he's a fully fledged vocalist in his own right, and My Soul Pleads For You is the latest in an increasingly long line of quality single releases. This one brings a new emotional twist and more than a hint of vulnerability in its needy lyrics, not written by Webbe but sung from the heart to a guitar line brushed with Mediterranean flavour. As the second album After All This Time continues to do well this will spark more interest in those who haven't yet investigated. At the very least it's confirmation that he's now one of Britain's finest male vocalists - soulful and assured. |

| EX-BLUE hunk Duncan James is terrified that he’ll look fat when he dons his skin-tight Lycra suit for Dancing On Ice, which begins on ITV1 on Saturday. The singer, 28, said: “I’ve had a back problem for over 10 years and I’ve got to wear a big strap under my Lycra top to support it so I will look fat even though I’ve lost about half a stone during training. “I don’t want to look as if I’ve got a big belly as I don’t want to end up like Andi Peters who the judge Jason Gardiner called ‘a Teletubby’ in last year’s series.” The skating show featuring 11 celebs begins on ITV1 on Saturday at 6.40pm. |

Stunning shows on summer bill // Added: 20-Jan-2007
| Posted: 20 Jan 2007 11:09 am Post subject: Stunning shows on summer bill -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ONE of Broadway's greatest musicals is among the highlights of an exciting new season at Milton Keynes Theatre this spring. Frank Loesser's hit production of the classic show Guys and Dolls, taking to the stage on February 20, features a sensational cast and a 50-piece orchestra, as well as breathtaking dance routines and much-loved songs including Luck Be A Lady. Before that, a sparkling production of the pantomime Cinderella can be seen until Sunday, January 21, starring Coronation Street's Bradley Walsh, EastEnders' Katie Ainsworth, and Laura Hamilton from ITV's Fun Song Factory. Thrills and suspense are on offer in the Agatha Christie Theatre Company's latest production The Unexpected Guest, running from January 29 to February 3. Dancing On Ice Betting Odds: Starts Tomorrow, Who’ll Win? // Added: 20-Jan-2007
| This week reality TV nosedived to the point where an entire subcontinent grouped together to build a giant wicker Jade Goody in order to destroy it with their fists and teeth - but just where the hell did all the fun, lighthearted reality TV shows go? Tomorrow sees the start of Dancing On Ice on ITV. OK, so Dancing On Ice might not be especially fun or lighthearted - or good, come to think of it - but because Dancing On Ice doesn't feature a loudmouthed pikey relentlessly screaming racial slurs at a crying Indian, we're sort of looking forward to it. Dancing On Ice, for those who didn't see it last year, is a bit like Strictly Come Dancing - except thanks to the hard ice and razor-sharp metal, there's a far greater chance that a contestant will slice an artery. Hooray! Unless Dancing On Ice becomes so crushingly awful that we can't bear to watch it, we'll be offering Dancing On Ice betting odds throughout the series. But who's even in Dancing On Ice this year, and are they likely to win? Here come the pre-series Dancing On Ice betting odds to win, with help from Paddy Power… Duncan James - Duncan James? Who He? Duncan James is the Primark Brad Pitt, if Brad Pitt was in a useless faux-urban boyband instead of a series of lucrative Hollywood movies. Since Blue split up, Duncan James has bumbled along with a complete failure of a solo album and a couple of ITV2 presenting jobs, but Dancing On Ice marks his big comeback in the same way that I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here marked Antony Costa's big comeback. Antony who? Well, exactly. Current Dancing On Ice betting odds - 4/1 |

The 5-Minute Interview: Simon Webbe, Musician // Added: 09-Jan-2007
| 'I was surprised to get a record deal. I was never a talented singer' Published: 03 January 2007 Simon Webbe, 27, formerly of the boy band Blue, has a single, 'My Soul Pleads For You', released 5 February. The album 'Grace' is out now If I weren't talking to you right now I'd be... Shopping. I'm stopping for a pit stop at a fish shop for scallops. A phrase I use far too often is... No worries. I wish people would take more notice of... This whole environment thing is scaring me a little bit. We still ignore it. We need to remember we're not indispensable to nature. Apparently half of London will be under water. The most surprising thing that ever happened to me was... Getting a record deal. I was never the most talented singer or person in that area. Only when I put my mind to it can I produce what I hear now. A common misperception of me is... That I was going to go down the R&B and hip- hop route. Also a lot of people think I'm arrogant, but I'm quite shy. Being a shy person I'm absolutely terrified about stepping on stage and have to put on a front. I'm not a politician but... I'd say that from the age of 12 kids have to do work experience at least one day a month to give them an insight into what real life is about. I don't think it's fair to ask someone what they want to do at the age of 14. And another language should be compulsory. I'm good at... Cooking Caribbean food. But I'm very bad at... Drawing. The ideal night out is... A nice restaurant or bar, continue in a night club and after, the after party, surrounded by friends. You know me as a musician, but in a truer life I'd have been... In the entertainment business doing something else. When I put my mind to something I get it done. I don't take no for an answer. The best age to be is... 17. There's only one year to go before you become an adult and get away with as much as possible. In a nutshell, my philosophy is this: Don't worry, be happy. Elisa Bray |

| Just wanted to wish u all a fab 2007! Hope u all had a nice xmas too. Im sure u have all heard by now, but i AM doing dancing on ice and have been practising for the last 6 weeks. Its really hard work but fun. My skating partner is the nicest (and the best i think!) girl who is bulgarian called Maria. She is married with a little 5yr old boy so i really want to do well in the show for her as she deserves success. I am really lucky to have the support from all of u guys already so i hope u keep watching my progress and let me know what u think! (just hope i dont drop her!!) Anyway presenting the lottery Wed, sat and the following wed so if im lucky 4 u then buy a ticket.....ya never know! On another note, i am aware that certain fans on here have been causing some trouble and argumentative and all i can hope is that this year we all get on. Its very hard for me to speak personally to u all as im sure u understand, but i just hope u can support me in the way u should and thats all i ask. Anyway once again happy 2007 and hope this year is a happy one for us all. Best wishes, Duncan x [Source: Duncan James Official Forum ] |
